Where Are They Now?: Rapidly-Aging Sitcom Kid Edition

If you were an avid TV watcher in the 80's & 90's, you probably noticed the trend: Sitcoms moms would become pregnant with what was usually the 4th child in the family... then there'd be a "birth" episode... then there'd be a handful of episodes about the baby... and then, all of a sudden, "the baby" would be six years old and be played by an older child actor.

The phenomenon wasn't new. Rapid aging happens on soap operas all the time. But those instances can be excused because soap operas seem to operate in a weird time vortex (storylines that take one day in their world can take a year to play out in ours). Sitcoms, on the other hand, tend to operate in real time, so the sudden appearance of a grade-schooler when three months ago there was only a toddler... well, I'll just never get used to it. Because it's weird.

Let's take a look at the child actors who played some of the mutant rapidly-aging sitcom children in the 80's and 90's and find out... where are they now?

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Ashley Johnson

(born in 1983)

Played: Chrissy Seaver (born in 1988) on Growing Pains

Actor/original character age difference: 5 Years

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared On The Show: 1990

Now:

Ashley has been a busy lady in Hollywood over the past two decades. In the 90's she starred in several short-lived TV series, including Phenom, Maybe This Time, and All-American Girl. She took part in the two Growing Pains reunion movies (2000 & 2004.) Recently, many of her credits have been as a voiceover artist (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Recess). She also played a waitress in 2012's The Avengers. And, like most living, breathing young Americans, she's on Twitter.

Brian Bonsall

(born in 1981)

Played: Andy Keaton (born in 1984) on Family Ties

Actor/original character age difference: 3 Years

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared On The Show: 1986

Now:

After Family Ties ended, Brian had what looked to be a promising career, with a recurring role on Star Trek: The Next Generation and the lead in films like Disney's Blank Check. He retired from acting in 1995 and became a punk rock musician. In recent years, Brian has had run-ins with the law stemming from assaults and drug use. Recent photos are all over the internet, but they're a bit scary, so I'll refrain from posting one here. View if you dare.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Bryton McClure

(born in 1986)

Played: Richie Crawford (born circa 1988) on Family Matters

Actor/original character age difference: 2 Years

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared: 1990

Now:

After Family Matters ended in 1997, Bryton made a couple of TV appearances and did voiceover work for a video game. In 2004, he began playing Devon Hamilton on The Young & The Restless and has appeared in over 600 episodes of that show over the past decade. He won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2007. In recent years, Bryton (now credited as Bryton James) has also appeared on The Vampire Diaries, Hero Factory, Young Justice, and Zevo-3. Bryton does his Tweeting here.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Daniel Jacobs

(born circa 1996)

Played: Joshua Matthews (born in 1999) on Boy Meets World

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared: 2000

I don't know exactly how old Daniel Jacobs was when he played a supposedly 1-year-old kid in the Boy Meets World series finalebut here's a hint: it wasn't 1.

Now: This kid's an enigma. I assume, at least, that he is still the son of Boy Meets World creator Michael Jacobs. (P.S. The Joshua Matthews character is set to appear on Girl Meets World, but will be played by a different actor.)

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Emily Mae Young

(born in 1990)

Played: Lily Foster-Lambert (born in 1995) on Step by Step

Actor/original character age difference: 5 Years

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared: 1997

Now:

Emily's acting career was short-lived (the last of her two films came out in 1999, and you may remember her from a series of Welch's juice ads.) She hasn't made any movies or done any shows since Step By Step.

The above picture has been floating around the internet for a few years. However, I can't find any other information about her. Emily, where are you???

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Haley Joel Osment

(born in 1988)

Played: Avery Brown (born in 1992) on Murphy Brown

Actor/original character age difference: 4 Years

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared: 1998

(Note: Haley Joel was not the first rapidly-aging-child to play Avery Brown; actor Dyllan Christopher (born in 1991) played the character from 1994-1995.)

Then: By 1998, Haley Joel was already well-known for movies like Forrest Gump and several TV series, including The Jeff Foxworthy Show and Thunder Alley. He was nominated for an Academy Award for The Sixth Sense in 2000, and appeared in several high-profile films afterwards, including A.I.: Artificial Intelligence and Pay It Forward.

Now:

In 2006, Haley Joel crashed his car and was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Fines & rehab followed, as did a lull in his career. However, he's revved that up in the past few years, and is set to appear in several films, including Entourage, a film based on the TV show of the same name. He graduated from New York University's Tisch School Of The Arts in 2011. Twitter? Of course.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Jonathan Lipnicki

(born in 1990)

Played: Justin Foxworthy (born in 1996) on The Jeff Foxworthy Show (alongside Haley Joel Osment, coincidentally,)

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared: 1996

Age Difference: 6 Years. (The mom was pregnant one season, and had a six-year-old the next.)

Now:

The kid who once stole our hearts in Jerry Maguire is now 24, and still does a bit of acting. Recent credits include a TV show called Family Tools and a film called Bad Asses. He, too, has a Twitter.

Oh, and if you're hoping to view dozens of different photos of Jonathan Lipnicki working out while shirtless (because... that's nice?), Google doth provide.

*  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *  *

Ross Bagley

(born in 1988)

Played: Nicky Banks (born in 1993) on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air

Actor/original character age difference: 5 Years

Year This Rapidly-Aged Child Appeared: 1994

Now:

Ross, who also played Buckwheat in The Little Rascals and Dylan Dubrow in Independence Day, took a break from Hollywood circa 2004. According to Wikipedia, he began attending California State University At Northridge in 2006. In 2013, he returned to acting, and has three films in post-production: Gnome Alone, Gilded Cage, and Dead Ringer. He has a Twitter account here.

Where Are They Now: Minor Made-for-TV-Movie Actors Edition

When I think of all the made-for-TV movies I enjoyed as a kid, it saddens me that so many of the actors have slipped into the depths of obscurity.

Or have they?

Maybe they've gone on to do great things, just... not in front of the camera.

Perhaps they've earned university degrees... become directors... raised happy families... or have worked toward solving social problems.

Or maybe they're all dead.

HEY, LET'S FIND OUT TOGETHER!

Here are ten actors from TV-movies from my childhood or youth who I'm curious about.

- - - - - - - - - - -
1. Schuyler Grant

Known For: Playing Diana Barry in Anne Of Green Gables (1985), Anne Of Green Gables The Sequel (1987), and... that other one. She was originally up for the role of Anne, but was demoted to Diana when the producers decided that the actress playing Anne ought to be Canadian.

Schuyler Then:

Schuyler More Recently:

Yep, she's blonde. And a yoga instructor! It looks as though Schuyler hasn't done much acting besides Anne, save for an episode of Law & Order, a movie I've never heard of, and a brief stint on All My Children. She married in 1995 and has two children.

- - - - - - - - - - -

2. Barret Oliver

Known For: Among other things, playing Dickon in The Secret Garden (1987). You also may remember him from D.A.R.Y.L. and The Neverending Story. His last film came out in 1989.

Barret Then:

Barret More Recently:

Uh, nope, sorry, not going to show you the photo I found on Google where -- if that IS indeed him -- he's rocking a hobo beard, and is crushing my childhood... crush. NOPE. WILL NOT ALLOW IT.

Oh but wait, there's more....

According to Wikipedia: In his teens Oliver left acting to join the Church of Scientology's Sea Org and was stationed at its Gold Base compound.[4] As is common practice among teenagers in the Sea Org, he married a fellow Scientologist at age 19.[5][6] He has since divorced.[7] Later Oliver became a printer and photographer specializing in nineteenth century processes such as collodion and Woodburytype. His work has been displayed in museum and gallery exhibitions and used in films. In 2007 he published A History of the Woodburytype.[8]

Tears. Cold, brutal tears. MOVING ON....

- - - - - - - - - - -

3. Sophie Wilcox

Known For: Playing Lucy in the old-school Narnia series (1988-1989)

Sophie Then:

Sophie More Recently:

After Narnia, Sophie seemed to take a break from acting, returning for a brief stint in several 90's projects... then another hiatus... and finally a role in a 2011 film called Gangster Kittens.

Sorry, not those kind of kittens.

- - - - - - - - - - -

4. Whip Hubley

Known For: His role as Lancelot in the Keshia Knight-Pulliam version of A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court (1989). He also appeared in Top Gun and St. Elmo's Fire.

Whip Then:

Whip More Recently:

Now in his 50's, Whip is still acting. Over the years he's guest-starred on shows like Profiler, The Division, Charmed, The District, and he has a movie coming out this year called Drones. He is married and has three children.

- - - - - - - - - - -

 6. Lisa Jakub

Known For: Playing the daughter in the 1996 TV-movie Bermuda Triangle. She also played Robin Williams's daughter in Mrs. Doubtfire and appeared in Independence Day.

Lisa Then:

Lisa Now:

Well, check out her website (there's a photo of her there!) According to the site, she is now married, a writer, and enjoys traveling and yoga -- and acting, for her, is a thing of the distant past.

- - - - - - - - - - -

7. Ciarán McMenamin

Known For: Playing the adult David Copperfield in the 1999 BBC production of, um, David Copperfield.

Ciarán Then:

Ciarán Now:

In 2011, he got the lead role in the fifth season/series of the British TV show Primeval. He has also made a few feature films in recent years, but does not seem to have forgotten his TV-movie respect -- having made half a dozen since Copperfield. Nice, nice....

- - - - - - - - - - -

8. Jodelle Ferland

Known For: Her portrayal of a young girl who's lost her father in Mermaid (2000). She also played Hollis in Pictures Of Hollis Woods (2007).

Jodelle Then:

Jodelle More Recently:

From a role in the Twilight saga to the voice of Aggie in Paranorman to somewhere around a dozen movies in the last two years alone, yes -- this girl's still acting. She turned 18 in October.

- - - - - - - - - - -

9. Tasha Scott

Known For: Playing Jennifer, Candace Cameron's cabinmate in the crazypalooza Camp Cucamonga (1990). She also appeared in the legendary Troop Beverly Hills and guest-starred on Full House and Quantum Leap (which lended her some actual cred.)

Tasha Then:

Tasha Now:

A singer (who once competed on Star Search), Tasha has recorded several R&B songs in recent years.

- - - - - - - - - - -

10. Ryan Merriman

Known For: Being a TV-movie-starring fiend in movies like Everything That Rises (1998), Smart House (1999), The Luck of The Irish (2001), and A Ring Of Endless Light (2002) (and yes, I've seen them all). He also played "Young Jarod" on the TV series The Pretender and I had a huge crush on him, but felt awkward about it because he was -- gasp -- 3 years younger than me!

Ryan Then:

Ryan Now:

Hello.

Still acting, Ryan has seven (7!) movies coming out in 2013. He married at age 21, but is now divorced. He remains attractive.

Where Are They Now: Minor Sitcom Stars Edition

You know those "Where Are They Now?" specials, often brought to you by the likes of VH1 or Entertainment Tonight? They're fun, of course... a way to "look back" and "get nostalgic" about the olden times (you know, the 80's). But the one thing that bugs me about them is they spend most screen time on the one who made it big (Growing Pains' Leonardo DiCaprio) or the "controversial" cast member (read: Lisa Bonet). But what about everybody else? What about the people who only appeared in a handful of episodes, but mattered? What about the stars of sitcoms that nobody watched and got canceled almost immediately? Why don't they ever get their five minutes on VH1? WHYYYYY?

Why? Because nobody cares about them.

EXCEPT FOR ME!

And so today I would like to delve into the whereabouts and whatnots of some of the TV show folks who I remember fondly. Have the actors gone on to do great things...? Or have they fallen off the face of the earth? Let's find out!

- - - - - - - - - - -

#1
Mitch Mullany, Nick Freno on Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher (1996-1998)

Then:

So it wasn't the greatest show... but oh, was Nick Freno adorable. He played this laid-back guy in his late 20's who goes to teach at a middle school and is able to tame and charm all the little cretins.

Now:

Dead, apparently.

Wait, what? Why what where when? I had no idea. I don't like how this list is starting out. The other people on here better not be dead, too, or this is going to get majorly depressing.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#2
Karen Malina White, Charmaine on The Cosby Show (1990-1992)

Then:

So I imagine some Cosby viewers weren't thrilled when, in the later seasons, they added a bunch of new secondary characters. But I was. I loved watching the adventures of Cousin Pam, her friend Charmaine, and Charmaine's boyfriend Lance. They were a lively bunch, and Charmaine, especially, made me laugh.

Now:

Whew, we've got a live one! Now 47, Karen still acts and does voiceover work. After Cosby, she was a regular on a handful of other shows, and has appeared in a string of movies of which I have never heard. But she's been pretty busy: check it out.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#3
Whitby Hertford, Walter, aka "Duckface," on Full House (1989-1990)

Then:

So he was only in three episodes, but what FH viewer could forget Walter, the pursed-lipped kid who had a crush on little Stephanie?

Now:

Age 34. Well, we'll always have the memories.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#4
Jasmine Guy, Whitley Gilbert on A Different World (1987-1993)

Then:

Jasmine was Whitley, the funny, spoiled southern diva who stole the limelight right out from underneath Lisa Bonet and wound up the star of the show. Her on again-off again relationship with Dwayne Wayne couldn't be rivaled. And while she may not be quite as "minor" as some of the other folks on this list... I'm including her anyway. Because I can.

Now:

Jasmine's been working steadily since Different World ended. She co-starred on Dead Like Me as the hilarious, don't-mess-with-me Roxy. She gave birth to a daughter, Imani, in 1999.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#5
Marla Sokoloff, Gia on Full House

Then:

Marla played bully- turned best friend of Stephanie Tanner in the latter years of the series. And this one time, they tried to start a band. It was awkward.

Now:

Marla earned minor fame in the 90's with a stint on The Practice and has guest-starred on a plethora of other shows. Now 31, she is married and the mother of a daughter, Elliotte.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#6
Nate Richert, Harvey on Sabrina The Teenage Witch (1996-2003)

Then:

Nate played Harvey, the cute, easy-going, oft-clueless love interest of Sabrina.

Now:

At 34, he's evidently now a singer in bars and such. Rock on, my friend, rock on.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#7
Kaitlin Cullum, Libby on Grace Under Fire (1993-1998)

Then:

As a little curly-haired cutiepie, Kaitlin played the obligatory middle child. (Pretty much every sitcom in that era had exactly three children. Strange, that.)

Now:

After surviving her teenage years, Kaitlin has made a move back toward acting. She's now 26 and heaven's sakes, that can not be the same person in those two photos.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#8
Penn Badgley, Joel Larsen on Do Over (2002)

Then:

Penn's character was a middle-aged guy who was sent back in time to age 14 and had to experience his high school years over again. Though it was a fun show, it lasted less than a year.

Now:

After Do Over, Penn was a regular on two other shows, The Bedford Diaries and The Mountain. Neither thrived, but they paved the way for him to land a role on Gossip Girl, where he rose to much fame. He's now making GQ and all the important hotness lists.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#9
Emily Schulman, Harriet Brindle on Small Wonder (1985-1989)

Then:

Harriet played the feisty, obnoxious neighbor girl on the show about Vicki the robot. The show was crap, but Harriet was my favorite.

Now:

After Small Wonder, Emily was a regular on the TV series Christy and played the title character in the WonderWorks version of Caddie Woodlawn. She later became a literary agent and is now an acting coach and the mother of three.

- - - - - - - - - - -

#10
Jason Marsden, Gregory on Almost Home (1993), Nelson on Full House (1994-1995), Rich on Step by Step (1995-1998), et al.

Then:

In the 90's Jason was like the Richard Belzer of teenage actors, appearing as a series regular on a bunch of TV series, sometimes even at the same time.

Now:

Jason is now 37, married with one son. And I just have to say -- this guy has got to have the coolest, geekiest resume of any actor working today. I mean, check it out: TV shows, video games, cartoons... Batman, Star Wars, Thundercats, Ninja Turtles. Does he do ComicCons? Because if he isn't getting invited to every single ComicCon, there is something seriously wrong with the system.
